SSF Newsletter June 2016: Switzerland fast-tracking its way to a sustainable financial centre

SSF is proud to have played an active role in two important publications over the last 2 months: "Sustainable Investment in Switzerland" and "Proposals for a Roadmap towards a Sustainable Financial System in Switzerland".

The recently published market survey on sustainable investments in Switzerland revealed the sharpest increase of sustainable investments ever. A clear sign that the topic has arrived in the mainstream industry. With the first Swiss pension fund announcing to divest from coal, this trend is further amplified.

Switzerland's hosting in Bern of a meeting of the G20 Green Finance study group offered large Swiss financial players a platform to illustrate their leading practices in integrating sustainability factors into financial decision making. To further evidence the Swiss commitment to Sustainable Finance, a roadmap report published in June lists 20 concrete action points to make further progress in making the Swiss financial system future-proof.

With so many important changes and advances occuring over recent months, we’ve updated and rearranged the content of our website to provide even easier access to the latest information on sustainable finance. We hope it supports you to stay up to date and involved in this interesting journey.

Kind regards

Sabine Döbeli

Swiss Pension Funds and Responsible Investment

WWF Switzerland, ShareAction, May 2016

WWF, together with Responsible Investment charity ShareAction, carried out a survey of the 20 largest Swiss pension funds. It analysed how far pension funds invest their beneficiaries’ money sustainably and whether they transparently provide them with information. Although all pension funds are in some way engaged in the topic of responsible investing, there is still room for growth to catch up to international best practice.

Closing thoughts

There was an impressive amount of activities in and attention for sustainable finance in Switzerland this spring, in particular the commitment from some large Swiss institutional asset owners and the public sector involvement in ongoing initiatives. With further SSF publications and events in planning for the autumn, we will continue working over the summer months to keep up the momentum and further anchor sustainable finance in the mainstream industry.

Best regards

The SSF team
